Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Multivariate Operator Theory" workshop from August 15 to 20, 2010.

Operator theory, which arose from the study of problems in physics and engineering, has been studied for over a hundred years. Over the past two decades the field has broadened to include algebras of operators involving analyticity. As a result, more geometric techniques and methods have become important and recent results have had an impact on these other areas. Opportunities have opened up for not only major advances in our understanding of operator theory but for possible significant developments in other areas of mathematics. There is also possible applications of such results to engineering and physics.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACYT).
