Since its establishment, BIRS has increasingly acted as a focal point for academic research to interact with industrial, governmental, and not-for-profit educational organizations. With no other facility dedicated to such interactions, both the university community and the non-academic community see BIRS as a hub for identifying areas of research, investigating possible solutions, and establishing collaborative projects. In collaboration with other institutes, BIRS assumed scientific leadership in moments of crisis and reacted pro-actively to scientific opportunities and challenges.
