Press Release:

Geometric Scattering Theory and Applications

Arriving Sunday, March 14 and departing Friday March 19, 2010

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Geometric Scattering Theory and Applications" workshop from March 14th to March 19th, 2010.

Scattering theory allows the examination of the structure of body by sending in waves and looking at how they are reflected and distorted by that body. Common examples include X-rays and ultrasound. Mathematicians have found that similar ideas can be applied to probe the geometric and topological properties of abstract objects called manifolds. This proposed workshop focuses on the use of the mathematical methods of scattering theory to probe the structures of certain classes of compact manifolds that are the distortions of spheres and other topological shapes in real and complex space.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
