Press Release:

Almost periodic order: spectral, dynamical, and stochastic approaches

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Almost periodic order: spectral, dynamical, and stochastic approaches" workshop from September 25th to September 30th, 2011.

The theory of Aperiodic Order considers systems without periodicity yet with long-range positional order, often of high symmetry. It draws from deep connections between seemingly disjoint mathematical disciplines as well as from the existence of such structures in the real world, for instance in the form of quasicrystals. The field has been shaped considerably by the continuous effort of Robert V. Moody since the early 1990s, and this meeting will focus on the recent developments by methods from dynamical systems, spectral theory and stochastics. At the same time, we will celebrate Robert Moody's 70th birthday.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
