Press Release:

Statistics and Triggering of Earthquakes

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Statistics and Triggering of Earthquakes" workshop from to .

Developing reliable estimates of seismic potential in different regions, and forecasting the occurrence of individual large earthquakes, remain fundamental unsolved challenges in geophysics despite considerable scientific research. To achieve progress toward this long-term goal, this workshop aims to foster better understanding of the underlying physical processes that drive the earthquake dynamics. These processes can not be viewed directly since they occur generally in the opaque interior of the earth. This necessitates inferring relevant information on the dynamics from the ongoing evolving patterns of seismicity and structures of fault networks. The workshop will bring together a diverse group of scientists from different fields – including statistics, mathematics, physics, geodesy and seismology – to review the state-of-the-art and initiate new cross-disciplinary collaborative efforts.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
