Press Release:

The Art of Iterating Rational Functions over Finite Fields

The Banff International Research Station will host the "The Art of Iterating Rational Functions over Finite Fields" workshop from May 5th to May 10th, 2013.

The field of complex dynamical systems generated by iteration of polynomials and rational functions is a classical area of mathematics with a rich history and a wide variety of results. Recently, there has been substantial interest in arithmetical dynamical systems (ADS), meaning the iteration of rational functions over fields of number-theoretic interest. In this workshop, we will study dynamical systems over finite fields, fertile ground for potential applications to many different areas of modern cryptography, coding theory, Monte Carlo simulations, physics, biology, and other areas, as well as for the development of algorithmic and computer-oriented approaches.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
