Connecting Women in Mathematics Across Canada

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Connecting Women in Mathematics Across Canada" workshop from to .

The Canadian Mathematical Society's Women in Math Committee aims to "monitor the status of women within the Canadian Mathematical community and the CMS, recommend actions to the Board which will assure equitable treatment of women, and encourage the participation of women at all levels of mathematics." We try to achieve these goals by organizing short events during the biannual meetings of the Canadian Mathematical Society. The many topics of discussion that arise during these meetings have made us realize that in-depth analysis of issues are needed in order to offer proper guidance to young mathematicians entering the profession. The weekend is supposed to serve as a career starter retreat for young female mathematicians. We seek to strengthen networks and mentor graduate students and postdocs entering the job market. We hope to start a conversation in this meeting that will be continued in the following years, and we aim to make these meetings a reliable forum that concentrates on issues arising for women pursuing academic careers, and one that young mathematicians can use to build support networks that can last through their careers.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
