The researchers participating in this focussed research group come from several mathematical subdisciplines. Their work and common interest here is to investigate new interactions of combinatorics (discrete structures) with comparatively well-developed subjects such as algebraic geometry and topology. Some of the participants have collaborated before in smaller groups, and this meeting provides the opportunity to work together more intensively. Two of the participants recently solved a long-standing open problem in the theory of graphs and matroids. This breakthrough used a combination of new and surprising techniques which we expect will have many additional interesting applications.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
