Press Release:

Field Theories and Higher Structures in Mathematics and Physics

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) will host the "Field Theories and Higher Structures in Mathematics and Physics" workshop from June 4th to June 9th, 2017.

The workshop aims at developing the fruitful interaction between higher structures in mathematics and field theories in physics. While Classical and Quantum Field Theories constitute the master piece of theoretical physics as they enable to describe the elementary components of matter and the fundamental laws of physics, Higher Structures is a fast developing new area of mathematics, at the junction of homotopy theory, string topology and homological algebra. Their interaction is astonishingly rich, in particular in the context of Topological Quantum Field Theories; from the physics perspective, these in turn provide a model for the construction of physically relevant Quantum Field Theories.

The goal of the workshop is three-fold: present the latest developments in these domains, foster new interactions, and train the next generation of scientists.

The Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO) in Mexico, and the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) in Banff, are collaborative Canada-US-Mexico ventures that provide an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station in Banff is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT). The research station in Oaxaca is funded by CONACYT.
