Getting to BIRS

BIRS is located in its own building (Corbett Hall) at the Banff Centre in the beautiful mountain town of Banff, Alberta, Canada. A wealth of information about the centre, the town and the surroundings can be found at the website of the Banff Centre which also provides detailed directions and maps.

Banff is nestled in the Rocky Mountains, approximately 1.5 hours west of Calgary and can be reached by car or by transit from the Calgary International Airport.

Directions by Car

From the Calgary International Airport:

  • Leaving airport parkade, turn left at the first traffic lights (Barlow Trail NE)
  • Proceed north about 2 km then turn left on and follow Country Hills Blvd for about 8-10 km
  • Take Route 201 (Stoney Trail) and follow it until Trans-Canada Highway #1, heading westwards towards Banff.
  • Take the first Banff exit (after about 1.5 hours).
  • Turn left at the base of the exit ramp onto Banff Avenue.
  • Turn left onto Buffalo Street (you will see the CIBC bank on the corner).
  • Continue up Buffalo Street and turn left into the Banff Centre and continue to Front Desk/Reception at the Professional Development Centre.

When you check in, please request assistance with your luggage and for directions to Corbett Hall.

The Banff Centre is revitalizing their campus. Until 2010, access through The Banff Centre along St Julien Road will be limited. Please follow signage on site to access parking and check-in areas. You should be aware that in order to enter Banff National Park (in which BIRS is located) you need to pay a daily user fee. For more on this, you may go to Parks Canada website: http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/visit23_E.asp

Long-term parking is available in the parking lot close to Front Desk or at the parkade on the north end of the campus.
