Coordinate methods in nonselfadjoint operator algebras

December 13 - 18, 2003

Organizers: Allan Donsig (Univ. Nebraska), Michael Lamoureux (Univ. Calgary)

Objectives

Nonselfadjoint operator algebras are connected to dynamical systems, single operator theory, and other areas. Coordinate methods, while requiring technical machinery, have been fruitfully applied to nonselfadjoint operator algebrs, in particular, making connections to dynamical systems and classifying families of nonselfadjoint operator algebras. Representation theory, crossed product constructions and ideal structure are also studied. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers in nonselfadjoint operator algebras and related areas, ideally to unify and broaden the technical machinery of coordinate methods to a wide class of nonselfadjoint operator algebras. From this, we hope for classifications of these algebras and precise descriptions of the ideal structure, the family of homomorphisms between algebras, and other related properties. Applications to the study of semigroups, free actions, and dynamical systems, are also of interest.

The conference begins with a reception on Saturday evening, held at a lounge in the residence. The program proper starts on the morning of Sunday, December 14th and concludes at noon on Thursday, December 18th. We plan to have no talks on Tuesday afternoon, so participants can explore Banff, go skiing, or do whatever strikes their fancy.

We hope that all participants will be willing to speak, giving either an hour or a half hour talk. In addition, we'd like to encourage participants to consider giving an "open problem talk". The idea is to present an open problem that interests you; the format is quite flexible.

We will post a schedule closer to the conference.
