Description

The Banff International Research Station will host the "Modeling and Simulation" workshop from September 2 to 4, 2011.

The principal organizer Dr. Zhangxin (John) Chen is known around the
world for his expertise in computer modeling and reservoir simulation. He
is currently the NSERC/AERI/Foundation CMG Chair in Reservoir Simulation
and the iCORE Chair in Reservoir Modeling at the University of Calgary.
Dr. Chen has over ten million dollars in research funding for the next
five years. These funds are from both the Chair sponsors and a consortium
of industry partners. Prior to joining the University of Calgary, Dr. Chen
was a professor and reservoir engineer at Xi'an Jiaotong University,
University of Minnesota, Texas A&M University, Mobil, and Southern
Methodist University (SMU). Dr. Chen held the Gerald J. Ford Professorship
at SMU, Dallas, Texas, USA, and was awarded the Chang Jiang Chaired
Professorship by the Chinese Ministry of Education at Xi'an Jiaotong
University. Other significant appointments include Director of the Center
for Scientific Computation at SMU and Director of the Center for Advanced
Reservoir Modeling and Simulation, College of Engineering, Peking
University. He has more than 20 years of experience teaching at various
institutions worldwide, edited five books, and published three books and
over 200 research articles in modeling and simulation.

The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the US National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
