The Banff International Research Station will host the "Self Adjoint Extensions and Singularity Resolution in String Theory and Quantum Gravity" workshop from August 21st to August 26th, 2011.




The goal of this workshop is to bring together mathematicians and theoretical physicists to discuss issues related to space-time singularities. Recently there have been several proposals for how these singularities might be overcome making use of ideas from superstring theory and quantum gravity. However, these approaches have not been sufficiently developed from the mathematical point of view. The workshop will provide the arena in which physicists can explain their problems and their ideas to mathematicians, and the mathematicians can provide the physicists with the mathematical tools they need to make progress in tackling the deep puzzles surrounding space-time singularities.




The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada's Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology, and Mexico's Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT).
