A brief introduction to BIRS with important logistical information, technology instruction, and opportunity for participants to ask questions. Workshop begins. Day 1 Theme: What is mathematical reasoning? We will discuss the following questions: * Is MR the same as or different from mathematical thinking and computational thinking? * What kinds of thought processes are involved with MR? * How does a person develop MR? * Are there good models for acquiring and/or practicing MR? * Is MR about mathematical content? * Why is MR important?

Lunch is served daily between 11:30am and 1:30pm in the Vistas Dining Room, the top floor of the Sally Borden Building.

Meet in foyer of TCPL to participate in the BIRS group photo. The photograph will be taken outdoors, so dress appropriately for the weather. Please don't be late, or you might not be in the official group photo!

Day 3 Theme: Mathematical knowledge & tasks We will discuss the following questions: * What kind of mathematics (e.g., computational, applied, algorithmic, pure) or combinations is needed for MR? * What are good tasks that will help foster better MR? * Are they scaffolded tasks? * Do these tasks require knowledge outside of mathematical content? * How to implement these tasks longitudinally in HS and/or throughout undergraduate studies and/or beyond? * What necessary instructor and teaching assistant training is needed?

Day 4 Theme: Designing tasks for MR (teaching, classroom activities, assessing) Groups will be asked to design specific tasks and present on the last day.

Opportunity for participants to network and explore research ideas and future collaborations based on the theme of the workshop.

Day 5 Theme: Putting it all together Each working group will be ready to present a sketched-out concept map on how to better support and enhance MR within the three student groups. The outcomes will be in relatively good shape so that they can be pitched to departments, curriculum committees, education committees both within universities and beyond.

5-day workshop participants are welcome to use BIRS facilities (TCPL ) until 3 pm on Friday, although participants are still required to checkout of the guest rooms by 11AM.
