Topology (07w5070)

Arriving Sunday, February 25 and departing Friday March 2, 2007

Organizers

Ian Hambleton (McMaster University)
Matthias Kreck (University of Heidelberg)
Ronald Stern (University of California, Irvine)

Objectives

The purpose of this meeting is to bring together a broad selection of researchers from many flourishing areas of current work in topology, in order to promote awareness of new developments across the whole field. The expectation is that the break-throughs in one part of topology will catalyse progress in another.

The actual topics presented at the meeting will depend on the participants' interests. The organizers will invite both younger and more established mathematicians to give talks on the current status and activity in their research areas. The program may also include one or more series of survey lectures, to report in more depth on a topic of outstanding interest.

Each of the expected 40 participants will be invited to propose a talk for inclusion in the program, and to prepare a poster or summary of their current research for circulation at the meeting. However, the number of talks chosen for presentation in the program will be limited, in order to ensure that participants have significant time for informal discussions. We also plan to organize smaller discussion sessions where participants will be invited to focus on open problems in their areas.

We hope that this kind of meeting at BIRS will become a tradition, in this beautiful natural setting in the Rocky Mountains, and have a significant impact on the broader research community.
